THE WORK MORPHS, AND INSPIRES
As
I think about the coaching I have done this past year, and in
the past 20 years, I continue to be amazed by what I witness.
Whether
the client is working on a major television production, feature
film, or short independent film -- OR -- premiering on broadway,
off-broadway, or off-off broadway.....this particular approach
to voice work yields strength, audibility, expressive expansion,
and vocal health! This voice work is also very adaptable and responsive
to contrasting mediums, so that someone working in film or television
will not "lose" their "truthful, natural voice"
if they expand into stage production where "more volume"
is often required, and someone working primarily in stage will
find that they can adjust to the medium without losing their vocal
fullness. With a developmentally organic core structure the "skeleton"
of the 24 Jones-based vocal exercises enflesh anew and become
what they are meant to be for the next project.
Most
recently I coached the actor Bill Irwin in the Roundabout Production
of Waiting for Godot on Broadway, and was thrilled to watch him
continue to evolve his speaking instrument for the stage with
both strength and subtle nuance. Bill worked with his unique physical
approach, integrating vocal principals so that the language &
resonance was an extension of his whole body exploration. This
actor is a veteran artist who possesses a willingness to expand
his already advanced skills. He has a fearless desire to question
and explore within his already mature process. He made the voice
work his own. He demonstrated for me a beautiful balance of the
discipline it takes to practice, and the discipline it takes to
improvise and follow instincts when applying what one has practiced,
in rehearsal and performance. He grasped the intended effects
of the exercises and was able to apply them in unique combinations
that supported his development of the voice for the character
he was creating. He continued to do this work during previews,
and after the opening; that level of dedication is a sign of an
artist on a journey motived by respect for the play, and expression,
vs. the ego. I knew he would soar and bring his vocal dimensionality
to the role, but was even more inspired by the way he continued
to want feedback even after he had garnered awards and stellar
critical responses. In jazz we say, "It's about the music."
For Mr. Irwin, it was about the play. I could write stories of
inspiration for all my students, as everyone (who applies the
work) moves me with their discoveries and vocal "births".
As
a coach I am a vocal midwife, and when I watch the new life of
a healthy, strong, honest voice burst forth, I am perpetually
in awe.
I
feel amazingly lucky to have two completely prodigious young coaches
(whom I trained) as part of a coaching "team". Patrick
and Daniel will be on board for the Fall class schedule again,
so we are looking at a very inspiring year....
Vocal
production Classes for Whole Body Voice/FALL are starting in October.
....
Coaches Patrick James Taylor and Daniel Sergio will also teach
Level I, and team-teach some Level II classes.
I hope this greeting finds you breathing in the wonders of every
day life.
We look forward to meeting you, and coaching you,
Sincerely,
Katie Bull
ALUMNI: Please contact

There may be some days when the coaches will inter-change,
or guest teachers drawn from a pool of expert body workers will
teach in support of the whole body as a speaking instrument. Class

do not know anything about the work itself. IF you do not know
anything about this particular approach to vocal production for
the speaking voice you can read the book by my mentor, Chuck Jones,
the recently released, new and revised book in which Katie wrote
the Preface: MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD, Backstage Books, available
on amazon.com, and at selected bookstores. Please come into the
interview process with some awareness of what you are seeking,
and at least a general sense of what the practice entails. During
the interview I am happy to answer as many questions as you have
about the work, and to enter into a deeper dialogue about the
aesthetic and practice.
I look forward to talking with you!
