"Katie
Bull and her trio are fine exponents of the American Songbook. Her haunting
and meaningful version of the Madeira/Dorsey classic, "I'm Glad
There Is You" assures listeners that her "Love (of good standards)
is Here to Stay. Bull's music bespeaks an undisguised delight of
the emotions she is quite capable of arousing...an illuminating &
exciting new approach in listening." "...(a)
unique delivery and style...Bull's newly released CD, Conversations
with the Jokers, immediately qualifies her for that deserving-of-more-recognition
category...Bull's scatting tendencies develop naturally when lyrics
and words just don't seem enough to get the point across. Her natural
swinging ability & risk taking make her a vocalist deserving a listen."
"...a
great use of experimental voice work. Using her voice and phrasing as
a free instrument alongside Joe Fonda's bass exploits one of the
most inventive ideas that have come from the new wave of jazz vocalists...Bull
will be a force to be reckoned with in vocal jazz." "...has
a lot to offer. She blends scatting with lyrics using her warm vocal
tones to deliver a strong performance. The program includes some bouncy
bossa nova, some funky blues and a lot of courageous vocal improvisation.
Promising."
